Relief from Seasonal Allergies
Recommendations

Environmental allergens cause an abnormal immune response resulting in seasonal allergies. Common allergens include animal dander, pollen, mold spores, and dust mites. Signs and symptoms include sneezing, sinus congestion, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and itchy throat. Below are recommendations to help alleviate your seasonal allergies
Herbal
- Nettle Leaf – natural antihistamine which blocks the body’s ability to produce histamine – tea or capsules used for acute relief
- Angelica Sinensis – antihistamine and anti-inflammatory
- Eyebright(Euphrasia officinalis) – decrease congestion. Great for sneezing, excess mucus, and itchy eyes
- Red clover – Increases body resistance to allergies
- Gingko – contains bioflavonoids, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties
These herbs can be used in Tea as one herb or combination of herbs
Supplements
- Bioflavonoid – help stabilize mast cells to prevent them from releasing histamine. Is a potent antioxidant which helps to reduce inflammation – examples include quercetin, catechin, and hesperidin; best used as long-term remedy
- Zinc – supports normal immune function, help alleviate allergies – zinc is found in red meat, liver, poultry, pecans, pumpkins seeds, ginger root
- Bromelain – natural enzyme found in pineapple, enhance bioflavonoids, has very effective anti-inflammatory properties
- Vitamin C – enhance bioflavonoids, helps modulates immune system, reduce inflammation
- Soil-based organisms (SBO) Probiotics – reported to decrease the incidence of allergies
- NAC – used for congestion as it thins mucous in respiratory tract
- Pycongenol – improves allergic rhinitis symptoms, has super antioxidants to help reduce inflammation
Nutrition
- Reducing seasonal allergies involves drinking water (1/2 of body weight in ounces), and consuming a Whole Foods, Anti-inflammatory Diet. Include
- Garlic – natural antibiotic, power antioxidant
- Dark leafy greens – great source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes which aid in detoxification to help reduce inflammation
- Bone Broth – rich in minerals and amino acids to support healing of gut dysbiosis(leaky gut)
- Local Raw Honey – help control seasonal allergies; do not give to children under 4 years of age
- Nettles, bamboo shoots, onions, deep yellow and orange vegetables, beets, carrots and yams.
- Lemons and limes – loaded with immune boosting antioxidants, detoxifies the body by ridding impurities
- Incorporate
- Probiotics – kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, natto, yogurt, raw cheese, miso, kombucha
- Eliminate sugar, wheat, food colorings, peanuts
- Apple Cider Vinegar – reduce mucous production and cleanse lymphatic system – mix a teaspoon with water into 1 cup of water and drink three times a day
Homeopathy
- Allium cepa – Indicated for bland, non-irritating discharge from eyes; copious, watery, acrid discharge from nose; hoarseness; and feeling better in cool air and open room.
- Euphrasia – Indicated for symptoms such as copious, watery, acrid discharge from eyes; non-irritating discharge from nose; dry, hard cough; much sneezing; diarrhea; and feeling worse in open air.
- Natrum muriaticum – Indicated for watery or egg white-like discharges; cold sores; no sense of taste or smell; headaches; and feeling better outside.
- Nux vomica – Indicated for runny nose in daytime, then dry nose at night; violent sneezing; nose feels blocked but there is watery nasal discharge through one nostril; and feeling worse outside.
- Wyethia – Indicated for extreme itching in the nose and throat; throat feels swollen; back of throat is dry and burning; and sensation as if something were in nasal passages.
Additional Information
- Washing your nostrils to prevent build-up of allergens
Neti Pot- use pre-made saline rinse or make your own by dissolving 1 tsp of Himalayan Salt in 1 quart of boiled distilled water. Let it cool and put in neti pot and use.
Saline Spray – opens airways and soothes inflammation – XLEAR Natural Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol – use few times a week
- Change and wash clothes often to avoid inhaling allergens
